An accent wall is a low-cost way to add depth and personality. Done well, it anchors a room. Done poorly, it looks like a mistake.
Choosing the right wall
- Behind the headboard in a bedroom
- Behind the sofa or TV in a living room
- The fireplace wall
- The far wall of a long hallway
Colors that work
Deep navy, forest green, charcoal, plum and warm terracotta all make strong accent walls. Pull the color from something already in the room — a rug, artwork or upholstery.
When to skip it
If a wall is broken up by doors, windows and outlets, an accent color will feel choppy. Consider painting the ceiling or trim instead.
